NEW YEAR WISHES TO TELUGU FOLK - PRIME MINSITER OF MALAYSIA

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak wished the Telugu community in Malaysia an auspicious start to their new year today.

The Telugu community, the second largest Indian ethnic group in the country after the Tamils, celebrates Ugadi today, which is the first day of the year according to the lunar calendar.

Najib said he hoped this year's celebration will strengthen ties not only among the Telugus but also among all races.

"As a caring government, we'll continue to support efforts to improve the welfare of the Telugu community so that they, too, will be able to enjoy the prosperity."

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, in a Bernama report, also wished the Telugu community a Happy New Year. He hoped that the community would remain united to face the many challenges.

"We have to strengthen unity to ensure the Indian community's survival and future.

"Together as 1Malaysian Indians, we can achieve our dreams and prosper economically and socially," he said.

Samy Vellu said Malaysia was blessed to have a multireligious and multicultural society, adding that the people had learned to respect the practice of all religions.

In a similar message, Human Resource Minister and MIC vice-president Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said tolerance and acceptance must be made part of life in multiracial Malaysia.

"A new year means new goals. As we move towards a new economic model, we must equip ourselves with the right attitude and education to embrace the changes that will take place."

Similar to traditions practised during Deepavali by the Indians in general, the Telugus will wake up early to take oil baths before seeking blessings from elders in their families. Later in the evening, they will go to the nearest temple to offer prayers.

Telugu Association of Malaysia Vice-President S. Venkatesh said one of the most important traditions which was still widely practised was the consumption of Ugadi Pachadi, a concoction of six spices and ingredients. The ingredients -- jaggery, salt, neem flowers, tamarind, young mango and green chilli -- represent the ups and downs of life. "Life is considered to be balanced only when it's a mixture of joy, sadness, anger and peace

The main stars of the film are Rana Daggubati, Richa Gangopadhyay and Priya Anand and the main reason why this Telugu film is so hyped up is because Rana happens to be the grandson of D Rama Naidu and son of D Suresh Babu. This is also his first film as an actor.

The movie “Leader” was premiered in India on 19th Feb 2010..

Leader is about the wide disparity that exists between an ordinary politician and a ‘Leader’. Even though there are no physical fights in this film (like most Telugu movies), there is a lot of drama involved.

Telugu TV news channels misleading reports of Andhra Pradesh

Message from: fullhyderabad.com
Dear Enkate,
Telugu TV news channels killing Hyderabad Image

Over the past couple of weeks, some Telugu news channels have been indulging in severely misleading reporting about Hyderabad in their bid for high TRPs through sensationalism.

They have been making it look like the whole of Hyderabad is burning, while in reality incidents of unrest have been happening in a small part of Hyderabad.

Hyderabad has already been hurt by the incidents of the past 3 months - the last thing we need now is irresponsible reporting that makes things look bad even when they really aren't any more.

We at fullhyd.com believe that a good part of the problem is being caused by irresponsible reporting by the electronic media, that tends to hype the smallest of incidents to monstrous proportions.

Somebody has to stop them and their competitive sensationalism - and it has to be the citizens of this city.

We have all enjoyed the growth of this city into an IT and biotech hub, and the jobs, lifestyle and dignity it gave us.

It's time for us to now give back, and save the city from reckless TV coverage that is killing Brand Hyderabad when the city is back to being just as safe and cool as it always was.

Here's how to do that. Post your protests on the forum below, and once the number of messages crosses 100, we at fullhyd.com will take prints of each message and send them to the CEOs of all those TV channels we believe are doing damaging reporting:

http://www.fullhyderabad.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=46837

fullhyd.com is one of India's largest local guides, with close to 3,00,000 unique visits a month now - and every post you make instantly gets onto our home page. It's the fastest and best way to get heard about this issue.

Protest now, and together we citizens of Hyderabad will all make them stop the damaging reporting soon.

Love,
The fullhyd.com Team

Telugu Actor GopiChand and the film producer of GOLIMAR with my family members in Langkawi, Malaysia on 11/02/2010 while filming in Malaysia

He was very humble and kind enough to allow me and my family to mix around with his 60 members crew and also to listen to my views about Telugu films needed to play better role to create much better understanding among Telugus as 1 Telugu, 1 Telugu Nation or 1 Telugu state

Gopichand did his engineering degree in Russia. His elder brother T. Premchand was working as an associate director to Mutyala Subbayya. Premchand made his debut as director and started working on a film under his home banner, but he unfortunately died in a car accident. Gopichand was in Russia during the death of his brother and could not attend his funeral due to visa problems.

Gopichand felt the need of someone to carry forward his father's legacy. As his brother was no more, he decided to enter the film industry. After completing his engineering, he did dialogue modulation course for a year. Then he made his debut as hero with ‘Toli Valapu’.
After doing villain roles in Jayam, Varsham and Nijam, he got a good break with Yagnam movie which turned out to be a blockbuster.
He was noted for his performance in Ranam in 2006. In 2007 his Okkadunnadu became a hit, next movie Lakshyam turned out to be one of the bigger hits of the year.
His next flick Souryam released in September 2008 turned out to be a blockbuster. This year he acted only in one movie Sankham which released in 11 September 2009 was an average grocer. His next movies are with Puri Jagannadh & Boyapati Sreenu.
He is very famous for his excellent action and dialogue delivery in addition to his impeccable comedy timing.

These traits make Gopichand a versatile Telugu hero, something uncommon in Telugu cinema. He is also very popular among girls as he is very handsome and cute. He is considered as Aggressive Star by all his fans & Tollywood.

Telugu words on the Bill Board in Malaysia

It is quite common to see shop/clinics business sign boards with Telugu words around Teluk Intan/Sabak Bernam/Rawang or on Telugu Associations buildings. But I believe it is 1 and only the 1 Bill Board with Telugu words too that I noticed along North and South Highway.
If one travelling from Tapah towards Bidor at about KM 336 you can notice the above. But how many of us are doing the same at our business centres?

Sankranti Subakanchulu

May this year 2010, & Sankranti bring happiness & United Telugus around the world with the blessings of our Telugu God (Present in the Lands of Telugus) Lord Venkateswara as 1 Telugu State

On this day Sankranti, is celebrated by boiling rice with fresh milk and jaggery in new pots, which are topped with brown sugar, cashew nuts and raisins early in the morning and allowing it to boil over the vessel. The new boiled rice is offered to the sun god, a gesture which symbolises thanks to the sun and nature for providing prosperity. It is later served to the people present at my shop for the ceremony.

Followed by praying to Lord Venkateswara by offering them sweets and specially selected mixed vegetables and vegetarian food.

The Telugus also worship and remembrance of departed ancestors by offerings clothes and their favorite vegetarian food to them (their photos or conduct prayers at sea sides). Telugu sweets such as Ariselu, Boorelu, Gaarelu, Bobbatlu, Pallu java and Sinipakulu also prepared.
Travel is considered to be inappropriate, as these days are dedicated for re-union of the families. There is belief that ancestors may visit us on this day.

Sankranti Telugu Style 13-16/1/2010

Sankranti/ Makara Sankranti/ Pongal Telugu style 13-16/1/2010

Sankranti is a solar event. It is the biggest festival of Indians. Three or four day’s continuous holidays by state government in India. So while dates of all Hindu festivals keep changing as per the Gregorian calendar, the date of Sankranti remains constant, 14 January. Sankranti is celebrated in the Hindu calendar month of Magha. Sankranti is celebrated wherever Indians are with some regional variations.
In India itself, it is known by different names and celebrated with different customs in different parts of the country as follows Makara Sankranti or Sankranti - Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, Manipur, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh/Telugus Karnataka and Goa ,Uttarayan- Gujarat and Rajasthan, Lohri - Himachal Pradesh, Punjab ,Pongal - Tamilnadu, Makara Vilakku Festival - Sabarimala Temple. In other countries too the day is celebrated under different names and in different ways:
In Nepal, Tharu people – Maghi,Other people - Maghe Sankranti or Maghe Sakrati,In Thailand - Songkran,In Laos - Pi Ma Lao; In Myanmar - Thingyan
Sankranti is also to honour, worship and to pay respect to the word mother, Saraswati Maa (Goddess of Knowledge). At the start of this significant event, there is also worship for the departed ancestors. The period is also considered an ideal time for aspirants to satisfy "the goals of life". Sankranti has deep spiritual significance and is rooted in an unshakable divine history and identifies a period of enlightenment, peace, prosperity and happiness followed by a period of darkness, ignorance and viciousness with immense sorrow. The worship of Saraswati is for the same reason that they celebrate Vasanta Panchami that represents the first day of spring and falls in.The worship and remembrance of departed/deceased ancestors is done during this Sankranti and is one of the most auspicious days for the Hindus.
Telugus style
It is a four day festival for Telugus
• Day 1 - Bhogi Panduga (Bhogi)-
• Day 2 - Pedda Panduga,(Sankranti)
• Day 3 - Kanuma Panduga (Kanuma)
• Day 4 - Dumulu Panduga (Mukkanuma)

The first day of festival is Bhogi. At dawn people light up a bonfire with several old articles/ coconut dry leaves/ bushes.A day before Sakranthri is known as Boghi. And on Boghi day, Telugus will usually apply a mixture of tumeric powder, green bean paste and sesame oil on our bodies to symbolically remove impurities before gathering with other family members around a bonfire or campfire. These are the regi pallu with petals of flower and coins of money, will be put on the heads of kids(generally younger than 3 years)(like talambralu) to get rid of Dishti(drushti). After which, whole house would be washed/ painted decorated with mugullu. All these events represent the change from old to new.

The second day is Sankranti, it is celebrated by boiling rice with fresh milk and jaggery in new pots, which are topped with brown sugar, cashew nuts and raisins early in the morning and allowing it to boil over the vessel. The new boiled rice is offered to the sun god, a gesture which symbolises thanks to the sun and nature for providing prosperity. It is later served to the people present in the house for the ceremony Followed by praying to their favorite God by offering them sweets and specially selected mixed vegetables and vegetarian food. The Telugus also worship and remembrance of departed ancestors by offerings clothes and their favorite vegetarian food to them (their photos). While most Hindus offer prayers to deceased family members on Deepavali, but the Telugus does it during on this day of Sakranti festival. Telugu sweets such as Ariselu, Boorelu, Gaarelu, Bobbatlu, Pallu java, Sinipakulu are prepared during this important festival. Travel is considered to be inappropriate, as these days are dedicated for re-union of the families. There is belief that ancestors may visit them on this day. Bhajans also organised for them.

The third day Kanuma Panduga (Kanuma) is for offering thanks to cattle, as they help farmer in different ways for agriculture. On this day the cattle are washed or bathed and decorated with paint, flowers and bells. They are fed red sweet rice and sugar cane. People do not eat any non-vegetarian during the first three days of the festival and eat it only on the day of Mukkanuma(Dumulu Panduga).
Modern day’s cattle are vehicles such as cars, Lorries, motorcycles or bicycles are today’s aid to mankind. And on this day what we practice is to wash cars, lorries, motor cycles, children bicycles and conduct thanking prayers for them as for aid in daily life.
Sankranti usually represents all the four days together. On the fourth day or final day people visit their relatives, friends to enjoy the festive season. It is celebrated in almost every village with adventurous games in South India and like in Malaysia in every estates and villages or even in all the Telugu homes.

Pending Telugu Issues to be addressed - 2010

Telugu language is not offered in PMR or SPM examinations?

To date, there are about 1050 students who are following POL Telugu classes at some of the government schools such as at Bagan Datoh, Sungai Sumun,Hutan Melintang,Teluk Intan, Klang, Shah Alam, Sunway, Puchong, Batu Caves, Rawang Sitiawan, Bahau, Kulim and Sungai Petani which totals to about 35 classes. But what is saddened and disappointed is, ever since 1993 Telugu language is not being offered any more as an optional subject in PMR and SPM examinations.

No Telugu channel for malaysian Telugus?

The private pay channel “ASTRO” in our country has not been considerate to air enough programmes for the Telugu community. The least they could have done is to at least allocate five to eight hours Telugu programmes every day and upgrade the Telugu serials and have if they had valued us, the Telugu community, as their customers too. or we being the minority group and are not deemed to be heard.
Then, we seek approval for satellite dishes to be allowed as there are lot satellite dishes around the country especially in the Perak,Kedah,Perlis,Johor and East Malaysia. And we should not be sidelined in the field of mother -tongue entertainment.

Telugu Senator ?

TAM has asked the government to consider appointing a senator from their community to highlight in Parliament the problems being faced by our community.
TAM added that the community subscribes were disappointed with the time allocated for them over ASTRO.

Telugu programmes over RTM?

Dr Achaiah kumar Rao further said that they would submit a memorandum to Information Communication and Culture Minister urging for additional time for the Telugu community on Minnal FM, the Tamil-based radio programme on RTM.

Is TAM conducting pre-census exercise?

The population census of Malaysia is being carried out once in every ten years. The last census was carried out from 5/7/2000 till 20/7/2000. Next population census exercise would be carried out possible during the month of June/July 2010 throughout the country. Past experience has shown that as Telugus and Tamils are look alike there are many occasions we are recorded as Tamils. As we, Telugus living in Malaysia must explain to the census officers to ensure that Telugus are recorded as Telugus in the Census Form: Telugu Kod 65. If every Telugu irrespective of whether a member or not member of Telugu Association of Malaysia must play his or her role firmly during the census exercise being done. That will prove to the Government the correct Telugu population and strength of the Telugus in this country.
If fact this is very important and pass this message on to all Telugus you meet so that they will be well aware of their rights by the time the Census begins? or TAM conducting pre census exercise?

1050 Telugu students following POL classes

About 12 years ago, there were a number of primary Telugu schools in Malaysia and it was from 1968 till 1992 that Telugu language was offered as an optional subject in LCE/PMR and MCE examinations. But it was from 1972 that of teaching Telugu was allow in other primary and secondary schools as “People Own Language” (POL) classes. And this was in accordance to the Article 152(1) (b) of the Federal Constitution guarantees to teach or learn any other language.

And the teachers who are conducting this Telugus classes are Sri A. S. Maniam, Ramulu, Kanniah, Soorinarayana, Smt Sarawathy, Sri Demudu, Apalasamy, P.Naidu, MahaLatchmi,B K Simanchalam, Ramulu, Appalanaidu,Smt KrishnaKumari , Samudram and Smt Priaya.

But what is saddened and disappointed is, ever since 1993 Telugu language is not being offered any more as an optional subject in LCE/PMR and MCE examinations.

We are only ask our mother-tongue which was here prior to independence and after independence till 1992 to be reinstated in PMR/SPM examination so that Telugu language and culture will not be decimated.
Loss of Telugu language and culture will be a dent to the rich cultural heritage of Malaysia. So, by including Telugu language in PMR/SPM it will facilitate our efforts immensely and it will spur us further in the promotion of Telugu language and the students too will be motivated to take the subject.

Malaysian Telugus

Who are the Malaysian Telugu?

The Telugu of Malaysia have ancestral origins in Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states of South India. The Telugu who migrated to Malaysia were mostly farmers from the lower caste (pattern of social classes in Hinduism). In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Telugu willingly signed on as indentured laborers with the estate supervisors from Malaysia and left their farms in Andhra Pradesh with hopes of gaining wealth and returning back toIndian one day. Though work was hard on the rubber plantations, they found time to plant vegetables and raised animals to supplement their income. They lived simply and saved their money. As years passed many opted to stay in Malaysia and only traveled back to Andhra Pradesh to visit family members or find brides whom they brought back. They used their savings to set up small businesses that eventually brought them out of estate work. In the 1940s, many Telugu ventured back into the estates selling textiles, household items, and food from India.

What are their lives like?

Telugu have now shifted from rural areas to the urban centers. Due to their emphasis on education, a large number of Telugu have moved up the social ladder from their modest beginnings in plantation work. Today, most Telugu are literate and educated. Many Telugu are professionals and have middle level occupations in commerce, the government service, and other professions. Very few families fall below the poverty level. A few men still wear dhotis (simple white garments wrapped between the legs loosely like a skirt); and the women sometimes wear saris (straight pieces of cloth draped around the body like a dress), especially on formal occasions. On the other hand, western clothes are the norm for most Telugu. The caste system is dying out with each new generation of Malaysian Telugu, partly due to intermarriage with other Indian and Malaysian groups. Some of the old Telugu customs seem to have been lost with time and assimilation into Malaysian society, though they still have a distinct culture and language. Most marriages are still arranged by Telugu parents.

What do they believe?

The Telugu are mainly followers of Hinduism. For the Hindu majority, their “Hinduism” is as much a lifestyle as it is a religion. Telugu are mainly Vaishnavites (followers of the deity Vishna).Telugu participate in festivals celebrated by most Indian Hindus in Malaysia such as Thaipusam (a ritual of human endurance, self-sacrifice, and the power of mind over matter) and Deepavali (known as the Festival of Lights). There are festivals distinct to Telugu such as Boghi, Sakranthri ,Ugadi (beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the moon’s orbit) celebrated during the month of March or April with Ugadi patchadi (special vegetarian meals) and Cherathalu (a joyful folk dance).

No Telugu programmes for Deepavali over Astro

It is truly sad and a disturbing Deepavali Sunday for all Malaysian Telugus. ASTRO shows its discrimination once again against the minorities in Malaysia particularly the Telugus. In spite of repeated appeals and request from Telugu viewers and the Telugu Association of Malaysia. ASTRO has turn deaf hear. There was no Telugu slot at all for Telugus who celebrated Deepavali on Saturday(17/10/09). Even the Sunday normal Telugu programmes slots were completely taken away which is the next day of Deepavali.

The PM calls for 1 Malaysia that is to accept and respect all cultural, religious and linguistic values by all Malaysian appears have not reached to ASTRO. I believe 1 Malaysia is not only focused on Malays, Chinese and Tamils in this country but also minorities like Telugus, Malayali, Punjabis and others.

Deepavali, a festival celebrated by all Hindus in the world but Astro is projecting as though if it belongs to only our Tamils brothers and sisters.

From the day of independence, the Telugu society had never once let down to give its sincere and strong support to the Ruling Government party. The community has strived to excel in all walks of life and contributed in many ways to the development and peace of this country for all most a century. The Telugu community has been a peaceful citizen and posed no burden to the government in any way.

Obviously, until today the close to 300K Telugu populations in Malaysia was not given a fair attention and the privilege and one of it is to view much of their mother tongue programmes.

It has been decades the responsible broadcasting Medias failed to fulfill the cries of the Telugu community in this country. Over private TV Astro which has 6 channels to cater for Indian views but very sadden that only 4 Telugu moives on sundays 4.00pm-6.30pm;mondays 1100am -1.30pm, wednesdays 2.00 am- 4.30 am & Thursday 4.00 pm - 6.30pm and a drama serial of the 4 repeated serials are shown for every week but whatever appealing and begging them, but unheard.

Annually RTM promised and even issued letter to WP/Selangor branch (Sri A Appanah Naidu was the chairman of the WP/Selangor branch, then) to telecast 3 Telugu films over TV 2. But to date, only 1 Telugu movie is shown during Telugu New Year. While TV 3 and Ntv 7 almost nil on Telugu programmes. And over Radio completely no Telugu slot on Sundays over Minnal Radio.

In many occasions, either directly or indirectly we have been deprived the rights to even enjoy basic entertainment in our own mother tongue via the public and private broadcasting TV stations. Even attempts after attempts we merely face negligence with unconvincingly feeble excuses from responsible quarters. Looking at the way this community is positioned we foresee the society on the track of mere extinction. To this issue, it is only fair to ask as a minority group like the Telugus in this country should be allowed to see their mother-tongue languages programmes over Satellite Tv being allowed. Anyway, there are thousand illegal satellite dishes around the country.

Looking at the reality, why not make legal for minority groups such as Telugus to view Satellite Tv?

Deepavali Telugu style

This year, Deepavali which falls on 17/10/2009 is on the last day of Lord Sree Venkateswara festival month. As to the records, this is a very rare co-incident and which has happened after 240 years.
For the Telugu Hindus, Deepavali or the Festival of Light is also another important celebration after Ugadi (Telugu New Year) and Sakranthri.

Deepavali, which is traditionally an occasion Indian communities to celebrate the victory of good over evil, is however observed a bit differently by the Telugus from the south..

While most Hindus take oil baths and offer prayers to deceased family members on Deepavali, but the Telugus does it during Sakranthri in January.

A day before Sakranthri is known as Boghi. And on Boghi day, Telugus will usually apply a mixture of tumeric powder, green bean paste and sesame oil on our bodies to symbolically remove impurities before gathering with other family members around a campfire. This is usually done in the early morning on the Boghi day.

On the Deepavali festival day after the morning baths, Telugus too will wear new clothes. As for the women, their sarees are usually tied in a kuddupaita style, where the pallu or the decorative end of the saree is draped over the right shoulder rather than the left shoulder as most of Telugus of Malaysia follow Vishakapatam suroundings of Andhra Pradesh Telugus does. On Deepavali day vegetarian food is observed.

Paul Naidu -Telugu Samskruthika Nilayam

1990-2002/ 2004 -2006

President

Telugu Association of Malaysia

Telugu Samskruthika Nilayam -this project is the brain-child of Dr. Paul Naidu

Telugu Association of Malaysia (TAM) has embarked on an ambitious project to construct a Telugu Saamskruthika Nilayam(TSN) in an areacovering 2.5 acres, located north of Rawang town.Selangor, Malaysia.

Subsequently, after due valuation, the search and examination, the price was progressively re-negotiated until it was brought down. to RM1.25 million in the interest of the organization at large. If negotiating and striking a good deal was a tough job, the process of applying and obtaining a bank loan proved to be tougher. After much submitting and re-submitting, the bank approved the loan only after obtaining the personal undertaking of the President( Sri Paul naidu), General Secretary( Sri P S Ramanaidu) and General Treasurer ( Sri J S Maniam) to act as Guarantors.

And all along the Executive council members and branches of TAM had to launch a vigorous donation drive from North to South. Inspire of all the traveling, appealing, arguing and giving explanations of the above purchase. There were those members and well-wishers who gave TAM encouragement, motivation and moral support. At the end of day, RM500, 000/- cash was raised to facilitate the down payment.

Upon registration of the TSN property, the Gruha Pravesam was grandly officiated by Y Bhg Tan Sri Datuk Dr K R. Somasundram, Executive Chairman, NLFCS and about 500 graced this occasion on 20/8/2000.

In the 1980s, the purchasing of Telugu Bhavanamu along Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur under the leadership of Dr A C Apparao was like a dream coming true of our founders of Telugu Association while TSN was a more than reality of the present Telugus.

The main aim to establish a cultural centre for our Telugu community in line with our objectives of TAM - to promote Telugu language, art, culture, social and economic aspects of our community. The full fledge centre shall eventually provide a cultural centre, administrative office anda multi-purpose hall centre.

TSN will be the centre to propagate our rich Telugu cultural heritage in South East Asia.

Annamacharya -Telugu Pada Kavita Pitamaha

Annamacharya
As we are busy attending Lord Venkateswara Brahmostsavam festival, it is only right that we should remember the Great Annamacharya likewish Kancherla Gopanna or Ramadasu who was a great devotee of Lord Sri Rama.
This great poet saint Annamarcharya who loves music and who worship the Supreme Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy. As known as“Telugu Pada Kavita Pitamaha, the great grand poet born once in a million years, it is proud of Telugu Literature. He is like an ever shining jewel in the grandeur of Lord Venkateswara.
Sri Tallapaka Annamacharya (1408 - 1503) is an Indian poet and musician widely regarded as the Telugu pada kavita pitaamaha. An ardent devotee of Lord Venkateswara of Tirupati, AP. Annamacharya is also known as Annamayya. He successfully composed more than 32,000 Sankeertanas in praise of Lord Venkateswara, the deity of seven hills at Tirumala, India where unbroken worship is being offered for over 12 centuries. It is a rare feat which is near impossible to replicate! The Sankeertanas were found engraved on copper plates which were hidden for centuries inside the Sri Venkateswara temple at Tirumala.
Annamacharya considered his compositions as floral offerings to God. In the poems, he praises Venkateswara, describes his love for him, argues and quarrels with the Lord, confesses the devotee’s failures and apprehensions, and surrenders himself to Venkateswara. His songs are classified into Adhyaatamika (Spiritual) and Sringaara (Romantic) Samkirtanas.
Annamacharya had composed and sang 32,000 sankeertanas (devotional poems), 12 Satakas (sets of hundred verses) Ramayana in the form of Dwipada, Sankeertana Lakshanam (Characteristics of Sankeertanas), Sringara Manjari (romantic poems) and Venkatachala Mahathyam. His works were mainly in Telugu and Sanskrit.
His songs gained great popularity among masses. Saluva Narasimharaya, the then ruler of Tangutooru learnt about this great saint and invited him to his court. He was then honoured and appointed as the “Asthana Kavi” in his court by the king. Annamayya stayed in the kingdom for a couple of years composing and singing great songs on Sri Venkateswara Swamy.

At one point, Annamacharya was once hand-cuffed and sent to the jail. The king ordered the soldiers to torture him until he obeys to sing praising the King. Annamacharya was even beaten mercilessly. When Annamacharya was singing a keerthana praising the Lord of Seven Hills saying that He is the only succour for him, amidst thundering flash the hand-cuffs broken instantly on their own and fell down. On learning the miracle the king Saluva rushed to the prison and fell on Annamacharya’s feet seeking pardon for his terrible mistake. His entire ego was shattered by the eternal devotion of saint Annmacharya for Lord Venkateswara.
When Annmacharya was in Tirumala he introduced many rituals and festivals celebrating and hailing the Lord. It was Annamacharya who first started and decided to perform “Nitya Kalyanotsavam” (the ever celebrated marriage ceremony) of the Lord Srinivasa with Goddess Sri Devi and Bhoodevi. Many other rituals and festivals introduced by Annmacharya are still followed in Tirumala Temple. He spent many years in Tirumala Temple composing and singing millions of songs on Lord Venkateswara Swamy.
The songs of Annamacharya inspired and motivated even the people of backward classes to have the darshan of that divine Lord. The great saint has composed and sang songs like “Kondalalo Nelakona Koneti rayadu vadu..! Kondalanta varamulu guppedu vadu..!” which means the God is our local who lives with us in these rocks and caves blessing one and all equally. “Tandanana Ahi Tandananapure… Tandanana bhala Tandanana… Brahmamokkate Parabrahmamokkate…. Parabrahmamokkate Parabrahmamokkate II…and"Tandana Padam" which is sung with a folk instrument called "Dappu" to propagate the Truth of equality of all human beings.
Annamacharya used to write the keerthans on palm leaves. When a group of miscreants were burning the Annamacharya's keerthans. As news reached to the King Saluva Narasimharaya who then decided to preserve this treasure forever and decided to engrave them in copper plates. With the help of Annamacharyas son Tirumalacharya the sankeerthanas saved from fire were engraved into copper plates. After completion of the engraving work, the great saint Annamacharya left the millions of his well-wishers and lovers in sorrow as he died on 23rd of February 1503 A.D. According to Telugu calendar the month is "PHALGUNAM", the Tithi (A day in a month according to the position of the Moon) is "BAHULA DWADASI".

The treasures of Annamacharya engraved in copper plates were hidden in a rock built cell opposite to Hundi (donation sack) in the Tirumala Temple unnoticed for over 400 years. His Son, Peda Tirumalacharya and Grandson, Chinatirumalacharya got the Sankeertanas of Annamacharya engraved on copper-plates and Treasured those Copper Plates in "Sankeertana Bhandaram" (a rock-built-cell at TIRUMALA temple. For many years the great saint Annamacharya had remained in the darkness. His songs were sung among people of Andhra Pradesh. But unfortunately, nobody knows the real creator of those songs until those valuable treasures of Annamacharya were found.
It was only in the year 1922, two thousand and five hundred copper plates comprising of 14,000 sankeertanas and a few other works were found in the rock built cell. The cell was later named as “Sankeerthana Bhandagaram” which means a treasury of poems opposite to the Hundi. It was only during the decades of 1970 the facts of Annamayya and Tallapaka Village has come into light.
Ever since the discovery of this lost treasure, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and other organizations in India are working hard to promote the music and literature of Annamacharya in India and around world.
Saint Annamacharya’s birth and death Anniversaries were grandly celebrated at Tirumala. TTD organizes many devotional activities and promote the sankeertans of this great grandfather of our Telugu Literature.
And every year there will a number of artistes from Annamarcharya project coming to Malaysia via Sree Venkateswara Temple of Sungai Sumun, Perak, Malaysia to perform during Brahmostsavam festival at Sree Venkateswara and after which around other Telugus living areas of the country.

Lord Sri Venkateswara Brahmotsavam Festival

Lord Sri Venkateswara's Brahmotsavam festival 21- 30/9/2009
Brahmotsavam is an annual Hindu festival celebrated for nine days in the months of September/ October every year at all Sri Venkateswara Temples around the world. Special abishegams are held from 1st to 30 of Puratasi Indian month. And this year, it is from 17th September till 17th October 2009. Generally the whole month only vegetarian food or at least during Brahmotsavam festival time.
In Tirupati Brahmotsavam is conducted from 21-30/9/2009 while Malaysian Venkateswara/Srinvasa/Varatha Perumal/ Balaji are conducting as from 19 or 20-9/09 till 29/9/2009. The Brahmotsavam festival is the most important and auspicious functions in Tirupati and all Sree Venkateswara Temples. Popular stories trace the origin of this celebration to Brahma, the creator God, who first conducted this festival to Sri Balaji at Tirupati. Brahma worshiped Sri Balaji on the banks of the holy Pushkarini in Tirupati as a way to give thanks for the Lord’s protection of mankind. Hence, this utsava bears his name as “Brahmotsavam,” which means “Brahma’s Utsavam.” In Tirumala, Brahmotsavam is celebrated in the month of September/October.The Brahmotsava is performed over a nine-day period. During the nine days of the festival, the religious activities include daily homas and processions for the utsava murti on different vahanas, which are the chariots that can be seen in all Sree Venkateswara Temples. Every evening, the utsava vigrahas are decorated with different alankarams. The concluding day is the Janma Nakshatra (birth star) of Sri Balaji, which is celebrated in a grand way with Avabhritha Utsava (special abhishekams for the utsava murti). In Tirupati, the Sudarsana Chakra is bathed in the Pushkarini and all the devotees bathe afterwards. In Aurora, a priest takes the Sudarsana Chakra on his head and takes a holy bath near the Dhvajastambham. Afterwards, the Chakra is placed on a high platform, so the devotees can walk under it and be blessed with the water dripping down from Sudarsana. The celebration officially concludes with “Dhvajavarohanam,” the lowering of the Garuda flag. The priests pay respects to Gods and Sages with the chanting of Vedic mantras and see them off on their return to the Devaloka. The Brahmotsavam celebration provides a unique opportunity for all devotees to participate in the festivities and utsavas and experience the “Vaikuntha Anubhava” (heavenly enjoyment and feeling) and receive the blessings of Sri Venkateswara Swami. Every year, millions of devotees witness the processions, celebrations during the annual Brahmotsavams of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala. Every day of Brahmotsavam will be a feast for the eyes of the devotees who gather there. On the first day the Garudadhwaja (flag with the emblem of a black garuda) is hoisted near the Srivari Alaya Dhwajasthambham. A festive procession of Lord Venkateswara on the Pedda Seshavahana proceeds around the four streets of the main temple for two hours until midnight.Ankurarpana and Senadhipati Utsavam are celebrated on the day preceding the first day of Brahmotsavam. Some interesting observations during brahmotsavas are: As incredibly as the swan which separates the water content from milk, the reigning deity of the seven hills too, on Hamsavahan, relegates the paap and blesses the bhakta based on his punya. As the powerful snake transforms itself as a vehicle for the Lord during the Seshavahan and Chota Seshavahan in the Brahmotsavam celebrations, the essence of the Sharanagati Tatva explains the moral behind this utsav. The initial prayers offered at the Dwajarohan utsav and Garudotsav is to pray for an unscathed living with high moral values, while Garuda, requested by the Lord himself to stay in the hills, guards the skies from anything untoward coming by.
Tirumala Venkateswara Temple (Telugu: తిరుమల వేంకటేశ్వర దేవాలయం), also known as Tirupati Venkateswara Temple is a famous Hindu Temple of Lord Venkateswara located in the hill town Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh. The temple is located on the Venkatachalam hill that forms part of the seven hills of Tirumala, and hence the temple is also known as the Temple of Seven Hills (Saptagiri in Sanskrit, Edukondalu in Telugu , The presiding deity of the temple, Lord Venkateswara, is also known by other names - Balaji or Srinivasa or Perumal. The temple is the richest and the most visited place of worship in the world. The temple is visited by about 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims daily, while on special occasions and festivals, like the annual Brahmotsavam, the number of pilgrims shoots up to 500,000, making it one of the most visited holy place in the world. According to the legend, the temple has a self-manifested idol murti of Lord Vishnu, with the Lord believed to have resided here for the entire Kali Yuga. In Sri Vaishnava tradition, the temple is considered one of the 108 Divya Desam sites.

My personal view of the Lord Sri Venkateswara is that we Andhras/Telugus who come from Andhra Pradesh or other parts of India. We should gather for all the festivals conducted at any Sri Venkateswara Temples either in Malaysia or India or anyway. As Lord Sri Venkateswara(Tirupati) of Andhra Pradesh is most worship in the world. The materials, songs, books and etc about the Lord are found the most. This in a way could help to gather US united under 1 roof and work towards 1Telugu.
I am also in opinion that doing or following prayers/festival for 9 days as Brahmotsavam make ones devotion/ attachment nearer to God. As according to our ancestors the 9 is the absolute number which classifired everything into 9 like 9 planets 9, 9 grains, 9 basic minerals and realising that 9 denotes all important occasions. Even one chants 108 times. Hence, following Brahmotsavam festival of Sri Venkateswara make one perfect or complete commitment to God.
I frequently go to Sri Srinivasa Perumal Devasthanam, at Klang, Puchong, Batu Caves,Subang Jaya, Sri Venkates Temple at Sungai Sumun, Teluk Intan, Perak and other one is at Komali Estate, Batu 6, Gemas, Johor built by my family Guru Swami Sinamah.
