Cultural meet for Telugus

THE Telugu Association of Malaysia (TAM) is organising an international Telugu cultural conference in conjunction with their 50th anniversary in Genting Highlands from March 3 to 5.
Vice-president cum organising secretary Enkatesulu Juvalu said an array of events and cultural programmes have been outlined to highlight the achievements of Telugus for the past 50 years.
“This celebration is intended to highlight the achievements of Telugus around the world and to establish a global network for Telugus,” he told reporters.

Enkatesulu said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is expected to grace the event together with MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and other Indian leaders.
“There will be a big delegation headed by Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy, key state ministers, artistes and cultural troupes from Andhra Pradesh,” he said.
He said foreign delegates from South Africa and the United States have also confirmed participation.
Enkatesulu said there would also be a meeting between the Telugu business committees of Malaysia and Andhra Pradesh.
The TAM was first formed in 1955 as Malaya Andhra Sangamu and changed name to Malaysia Andhra Sangamu in 1963 before taking its present name in 1983. It serves the 300,000 Telugu population in Malaysia.
Enkatesulu said TAM had hosted the Second World Telugu conference and silver jubilee in Kuala Lumpur in 1981.
