PENDING ISSUES TO THE ATTENTION of PRIME MINSITER OF MALAYSIA

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak wished the Telugu community in Malaysia an auspicious start to our new year for this year. He further added that this year's celebration will strengthen ties not only among the Telugus but also among all races as and "As a caring government, we'll continue to support efforts to improve the welfare of the Telugu community so that they, too, will be able to enjoy the prosperity. 
And it is only right and fair that we Malaysian Telugus/ 30 branches of Telugu Association branches around the country to bring to the attention of the our beloved Prime Minister of Malaysia of the Pending Telugu main issues as follows:-

Telugu language is not offered in PMR or SPM examinations?

To date, there are about 1050 students who are following POL Telugu classes at some of the government schools such as at Bagan Datoh, Sungai Sumun,Hutan Melintang,Teluk Intan, Klang, Shah Alam, Sunway, Puchong, Batu Caves, Rawang Sitiawan, Bahau, Kulim and Sungai Petani which totals to about 35 classes. But what is saddened and disappointed is, ever since 1993 Telugu language is not being offered any more as an optional subject in PMR and SPM examinations.

No Telugu channel for malaysian Telugus?
The private pay channel “ASTRO” in our country has not been considerate to air enough programmes for the Telugu community. The least they could have done is to at least allocate five to eight hours Telugu programmes every day and upgrade the Telugu serials and have if they had valued us, the Telugu community, as their customers too. or we being the minority group and are not deemed to be heard. Telugu community subscribers were disappointed with the time allocated for them over ASTRO.

Or, allow the approval for the usage of satellite dishes as there are lot satellite dishes around the country especially in the Perak,Kedah,Perlis,Johor and East Malaysia.

Telugus should not be sidelined in the field of mother -tongue entertainment.

‘Attempting the Civil exam in Telugu not advisable’

  

With the UPSC bringing about far-reaching changes to the pattern of the Civil Services Main examination, the panel of experts at an interactive session on the Civil Services Main examination, organised by The Hindu and Hyderabad Study Circle, answered queries of aspirants. Excerpts follow:

How does one prepare for exam, now that the pattern has changed?

Candidates can follow the curriculum development reports published by the University Grants Commission. They are available on the UGC website; pick a topic and study. UPSC requires candidates to understand the spirit and fundamentals of a subject.

I am a B. Tech with a Telugu-medium background. Which subject would be an ideal optional for me?

If you read Telugu papers or if you are good at Telugu literature, it is preferable to avoid technical subjects.

It is always best to pick subjects in which you are comfortable. Reading the newspaper daily will help a lot.

What abilities do interviewers look for during interviews?

There are several parameters — mental ability, alertness, grasping power, trainability, integrity. These details are available in the mains prospectus.

How does one deal with the Ethics paper?

The second Administrative Reforms Commission report on ethics is a good resource. It is available on the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) website.

Will attempting the exam in the Telugu-medium be a disadvantage, given the lack of resources?

There aren’t many resources available in Telugu. Unless candidates have a command over the language, the choice of Telugu-medium is not advisable. It is good to read and practice in Telugu literature, if a candidate decides to write in Telugu.

Can the interview happen in a regional language?

There is an option to take the interview in the language of one's choice. However, it is not advisable as the translator’s role becomes important. There is a possibility of the translator being unable to convey the exact message. It is best to learn English and attend interviews in English.

Can you provide us some tips for the essay paper?

There are no shortcuts. Identify topics from current contexts and practice accordingly. Generally, questions are statement-oriented and candidates do not have to defend or oppose the proposition. They will have to provide both sides of the coin.

How relevant is job experience?

There is no weightage for job experience.

I am a B.Tech. and wish to join the Indian Engineering Service. Please give me some tips.

Though there are many engineering colleges in the State, not many students are willing to join the IES. There are four to five disciplines in the IES. Choose the one which you are comfortable in. Prospects are good.

There are some common topics in the Optional subject and General Studies. Should there be any difference in answering them?

In General Studies, as the name suggests, the approach will have to be a general one. For the Optional paper, candidates will have to present their command over the topic here.

There is talk that the government plans to introduce legal services shortly. Could you provide some insight into the same?

There is a proposal but not many details are available as of now. There are alternatives though. Judicial and corporate services are good prospects, if one is interested.

Telugu industry to celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema

Hyderabad, May 22 : The Telugu film industry wants to highlight its contribution to Indian cinema and will kickstart the centenary celebrations here soon amongst the presence of the entire fraternity.

"We have never highlighted how much has Telugu industry contributed to Indian cinema. We want to showcase the achievements of some of our luminaries who have made us proud over the years. The celebrations will start soon and we have also requested the support of the state government," Thammareddy Bharadwaja, president, Andhra Pradesh Film Chamber of Commerce, told IANS.

"Members of our industry such as N.T. Rama Rao, S.V. Ranga Rao, Dasari Narayana Rao, Raghupathi Venkaiah and Vijayanirmala have brought laurels to our industry, but rarely do people know about them or their achievements. It is our responsibility to bring them to limelight," he added.

He said Telugu industry has contributed as much any other to Indian cinema.

"Indian cinema is not only Bollywood or any other industry for that matter because every industry has contributed to it equally. Nobody knows of actors who were part of Telugu cinema in the 1940s and 1950s," he said.

Talking about the celebrations, he said: "We wouldn't have any song and dance type of celebration, but have plans for something bigger. We also want to show the rich heritage of Telugu cinema through exhibition.

"It will be open to public and those interested can contribute to the exhibition with whatever they posses - it could be posters, photographs and personal memorabilia," Bharadwaja said.

As part of the celebrations, the chamber also plans to honour theatre as well.

"Theatre has had a great impact on Telugu cinema over the years. We have plans to honor 130-year old Surabhi Theatre Group that has given this industry so many legendary actors. We have planned for a theatre festival staring today (Wednesday)," he said

The Surabhi Theatre Festival will go on till May 27.

Today 10:30 pronounced to be muhurat for the statue establishment. NTR created many, 'many' records in films and politics and his idol is also following the same trend by being the longest statue ever placed in Indian Parliament.

Veteran Playback Singer P B Sreenivas

Veteran playback singer, the famous P.B Sreenivas passed away on Sunday at his residence in Chennai, Tamil Nadu after a brief illness. He was 82.

Prathivadi Bhayankara Sreenivas (22 September 1930 – 14 April 2013), was a veteran playback singer from India. He was born in Gollaprolu near Kakinada in East Godavri District of Andhra Pradesh. He had sung around 3000 songs in Telugu Kannada, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam and Tulu films. He was known for his playback singing in the Telugu Kannada, and Tamil film industries. He had sung in all the main languages of the country but it is in Kannada that he has the highest number of songs in his career. He died on 14 April 2013 at the age of 82 in Chennai.

He was fluent in eight languages Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, Urdu, English and Sanskrit) and had penned several ghazals in Telugu. Sreenivas sang duets and triplets with Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum and Jikki apart from leading a chorus song. He was introduced in Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu simultaneously in the movie Jathaka Phala (Jathakam) by R. Nagendra Rao.

Sreenivas made his début in 1952 in Gemini's Hindi film Mr Sampat, where his song "Aji hum Bharat ki naari", a duet with Geeta Dutt, became popular. He entered the Kannada film industry in 1953 through the movie Jathaka Phala, which was later made in Tamil and Telugu also. In Kannada, he achieved great success through Bhakta Kanakadasa starring Super Star Dr.Rajkumar. The song Baagilanu teredu of the film was a very big hit. Later he went on to sing greatest numbers for Super Star Dr.Vishnuvardhan, Srinath, Kalyan Kumar, Udaya Kumar and others. In 1955 he also sang in the Malayalam film Harishcandra.^[3] His first solo hit came in the movie Prema Pasam in which he also sang a duet with P. Susheela. His first song for Rajkumar was in 1956 film Ohileshwara. Later he sang for the Super Star for a long time and the association was highly appreciated by critics, fans and the industry. In the Tamil industry, his maximum number of songs are for Gemini Ganesan. The most memorable hit of this duo was 'Nilave ennidam nerungathe'. He had sung for other actors as well but incidentally, he had sung very few songs for M. G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan.He sang the popular duet in Hindi Chanda Se Hoga Wo Pyaara (with Lata Mangeshkar) in the film Main Bhi Ladki Hoon in 1964. In Tamil his voice was more used for actors Gemini Ganeshan, Muthuraman, Ravichandran, Jaishankar.

In Pava Mannippu, Sreenivas sang "Kalangalil Aval Vasantham" written by Kannadasan and set to music by the music duo M. S. Viswanathan - T. K. Ramamoorthy. The film Adutha Veettuppenof Anjali Pictures carried some of his songs. Sreenivas has also sung with P.Susheela, S. Janaki, P. Bhanumathi, K. Jamuna Rani, L. R. Easwari and Lata Mangeshkar for the movie Main Bhi Ladki Hoon and some North Indian Singers. His devotional songs include "Sharadha Bhujanga Stothram", "Sri Venkateswara Suprabhatham", "Mukunda Mala", "Shri Mallikarjuna Stotram" and Purandaradasa compositions. His "home away from home" was the Woodlands Drive-In restaurant in Chennai where one could frequently spot him sit quietly writing poetry.^[4] He had headed many music related organizations such as being the president of Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram.

Though Sreenivas had hit numbers in all the languages that he sang, it was in the Kannada Film Industry that he sang the highest number of songs in his career and it was in the Kannada Industry that he delivered the highest number of hit songs. PB Sreenivas ruled the Kannada Industry for over three decades and was the voice for many Super Stars though his combination with Dr.Rajkumar created history^[5]. He was instrumental in shaping the Kannada identity like Dr.Rajkumar and Dr.Vishnuvardhan^[6]. He has sung thousands of songs and most of his songs were big hits. He has the credit of lending his voice for the most popular ever green songs of the Kannada Cinema like Nee bandu Ninthaaga, Ravivarmana, Akashave Beelali mele, Baare Baare Chandada Cheluvina, Olave Jeevana Sakshathkara, Panchama Veda, Kannadada Kuladevi, Binkada Singari, Olavina Priyalathe, Ivalu Yaaru Balleyenu, Baa Thaayi Bharathiye, Naavaduva Nudiye, Gaganavu Ello, Apaara keerthi, Malenaada Henna, Indu Enage, Neera Mele Aleya Ungura, Uthara Druvadhim, Kannada Naadina Veera Ramaniya, Endendu Ninnanu Marethu, Endu Ninna Noduve, Thookadisi Thookadisi Beeladiru Thamma and many more.

Series of programmes planned to revive the glory of Telugu language

A new programme, Telugu Baata, aimed at regaining the past glory of the Telugu language will be launched this year, which is being observed as Telugu renaissance year.

Announcing this at Ugadi celebrations at Ravindra Bharati here on Thursday, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy said that as part of the programme, activities would be undertaken once in two months at village, mandal and district levels through Nehru Yuva Kendras and Mahila/Bal Bhavans highlighting Telugu culture and heritage. Space would be earmarked in public parks and labelled as ‘Telugu Thota’.

The programme would be funded from the Rs. 25 crore provided in the budget. An action plan released by Mr. Kiran Reddy said school textbooks in Telugu would be revised to include chapters on poems, proverbs and profiles of great Telugu personalities. Telugu dictionaries would be modernised to include latest words.

At the celebrations, a rural landscape was depicted on the dais through a flexi backdrop which showed lush green paddy fields, canals and crop harvesting. More than a dozen Ministers and several other dignitaries listened as Dr C. V. B. Subrahmanyam of Telugu University read out the almanac. The Chief Minister released the almanacs of TTD and Agriculture and Horticulture Departments, and honoured Vedic scholars, poets, artistes and eminent personalities. Clad in a dhoti, he went round photo and books exhibitions held outside the auditorium on the Fourth World Telugu Conference (WTC). He referred to revival of Telugu Akademis and the plan to introduce Telugu as a language subject up to SSC by July as per WTC resolutions but appealed to people to extend cooperation as the government alone would not be able to achieve renaissance. Reading out the almanac, Dr. Subrahmanyam said the New Year, Vijaya, would be a good year for the Telugu people. There would be good rains and reservoirs would be full, resulting in bumper crops and prosperity. The Chief Minister would stabilise his position, though he would face some problems.

Clients are unable to follow the judgments delivered in English, says HC Judge

Andhra Pradesh High Court Judge Justice N. Venkata Ramana exhorted advocates and judges to conduct arguments in Telugu language.

“Lawyers should minimise the use of English and judges should deliver verdicts in the local language. Please try to improve the use of the mother tongue and protect Telugu culture,” Mr. Justice Venkata Ramana has said.

He, along with other High Court judges Justices G. Bhavani Prasad and G. Chandraiah, AP State Official Language Commission Chairman Mandali Buddha Prasad, film writer Jonnavittula Ramalingeswara Rao, and AP Judicial Academy Director Vedantam Seetarama Avadhani attended a seminar on ‘Telugu in Judicial Administration’, organised by the Bezawada Bar Association (BBA) here on Saturday.

Addressing the lawyers, Mr. Justice Venkata Ramana observed that clients were unable to follow the judgments delivered in English getting frightened when they see lawyers and police.

“It is our duty to conduct the proceedings in the local language and allay the fears among the people,” he said.

Explaining the sweetness of Telugu language, he said a foetus too would learn it from the mother’s womb. Language would highlight the history and culture. Respecting Telugu is nothing but respecting the mother, Mr. Justice Venkata Ramana opined.

Mr. Justice Bhavani Prasad said the Madras High Court had directed the use of Telugu language in courts when Andhra Pradesh was under unified State.

During the British rule, the arguments were in Telugu. During the Nizam rule, the proceedings in courts were held in Urdu.

“After independence, we are neglecting the local language. It is unfortunate to discuss whether Telugu should be implemented in judicial administration or not and the consequences on usage of mother tongue.”

“Lawyers can argue in the local language and the judge should accept the proceedings. The ministerial staff should issue notices and summons and make all other transactions in the local language,” Mr. Justice Prasad said.

Mr. Buddha Prasad said the government had designed a software with 18 fonts in Telugu, which would be distributed to all courts.

Bar association president G. Venkateswara Rao presided over the programme.

Establishment of Andhra or Telugu Association of Malaysia Klang Branch

It is on 28th February 1982 that I took the initiative to gather some of the Telugus living around Klang namely Suba, P. Seethapathy, Bala T. M Appalasamy, Marinaidu,Ulu Appalanaidu, Sinniah, Dr Nanda Gopal,Nookaraju,Mahaletchimi,Apparao and T PremaLatha Naidu to form a protem committee of the Klang Branch. The first protem committee meeting was held at Suba Optical Jalan Datuk Hamzah, Klang

In fact, we invited Mr A. Appana Naidu who was then working around PM Department, Shah Alam to head the committee who later declined after one or two committee meetings as he was transfered back to K.Lumpur/KK. After which I headed the protem committee.

The Branch was registered on 23th April, 1982 and a new life was energized into the Klang Branch. And in 1983 as Andhra Association of Malaysia was renamed as Telugu Association of Malaysia for simple reason to allow Telugus who migrated from other states of India or any other countries besides Andhra Pradesh could also join the Association.

Upon this new rebirth the Branch took on many activities and it has progressed well to become a good concentration of many Telugus in the Klang/ Shah Alam area,then.

I was the first chairman of this 18th registered Klang branch from 1982 till 1986. Some remarkable activities were spearheaded by my committee and some of them as follows:-

In the same year Klang hosted Annual General Meeting of Andhra Association of Malaysia. It was at this Annual Meeting that the new name Telugu Association of Malaysia was tabled and passed besides the change of annual meeting to be conducted as Biennial Meetings. The Report and Accounts submission of Silver Jubilee Celebrations & 2nd World Telugu Conference held from 14 till 19 April,1981 at Civic Centre, Petaling Jaya was also done at this Annual General Meeting in Klang.

In the year 1983 - MIC Taman Gembira, Klang /Kerala Samanjam Klang Branch /TAM Klang branch jointly organised “Malam Nirava" culturely show.

Annually Ugadi Celebrations were done grand scale.

In 1984 a “Lucky Draw” Lottery was launched to raise funds for the purpose of buying a building for the Klang Branch. The event raised a good sum of RM 10,900 and it remained as a Building Fund in the Book Keeping Entries.

In 1985 the Branch helped Telugu Association Malaysia (TAM) headquarters to organize a dinner to honour MIC President, Dato Seri Samy Velu for his 50 years birthday at the Dewan Hamzah,Klang.

• Ugadi celebrations& Bhajans and devotional activities at members homes on rotation.

• Regular committee meetings to discuss on current issues at hand.

• Telugu classes conducted by Mr Rama(Banting)& Membership drives to gather new members.

• Get together sessions amongst members and members’ families.

Although the Klang Branch took its real active life form in 1982 onwards but we must not forget to mention there was this Andhra Association of Malaysia Klang District branch being officially registered on 22nd April 1971 with its official address at 759, Jalan Rasah, Pandamaran New Village, Port Swettenham, Selangor under chairmanship Sri Narayanasamy Reddy, PPM, PJK. At that particular time Sri Narayanasamy Reddy was a Chief Clerk at the Majlis Perbandaran Klang. However the earlier branch was deregistered on establishment Klang Branch.

When I was then the newly formed Klang branch chairman was one of those besides Dr. A C Apprao, then the President and Late R. P Ramulu then the General Treasurer who were involved in the preparation and approval of constitution and even shifting the HQ address from which was registered at N0 41, 25th mile, Bagan Datoh,Perak or Ipoh office (ROS)registration to Kuala Lumpur.

Besides, I was also able obtained permission from Ministry of Home Affairs(KDN newspaper permit) for circulation newspaper for Telugus in the Telugu/ English language for Nokiah Gary, then the Secretary General of TAM.

Last year after 25 years,Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the Klang branch were grandly conducted.
